Editor's note: Xató is closed with no immediate plans to reopen.
Xató are wowing critics with their modern, global spin on Asian gastronomy – bringing together Japanese, Latin American and Adriatic flavours. Xató is the first restaurant in the Balkans to commission a purpose built ‘Robata’, a traditional Japanese grill, and uses fancy culinary techniques involving vapours, volcanic rock and Japanese charcoal. A minimally adorned dining room gives the restaurant a contemporary, polished feel. Run by Tvrtko Šakota, the chef behind Taco & Burger Barr, this high-concept restaurant offers a six course taster menu at 260 kuna or seven dishes at 360 kuna – include drinks, and you won’t get much change from 50 euros. That said, it’s a chance to sample gutsy modern cooking from one of Zagreb’s most creative chefs.
