This weekend, Medvedgrad Castle outside Zagreb will host its annual Medieval Days Festival, throwing its gates open to knights, nobility and the general public. From 11am to 6pm this Saturday and Sunday, the castle will travel back in time to give a rare glimpse of life between its walls more than 700 years ago. You can try your hand at archery, play medieval board games, sample dishes made from period recipes, and much more. The marquee attraction is a tournament, with knights in armour fighting it out.

Defending Zagreb from invasion in centuries past, the castle has recently been renovated and turned into a museum and a destination for hikers.

Medvedgrad Castle can either be reached by car, by the 102 bus from Britanski trg stopping at Šestin Church followed by an approximate hour-long hike along trail 12, or by the 128 bus from Črnomerec stopping at Lukšić followed by an hour's walk. More details about the castle and the festival can be found on the Medvedgrad Castle website.
