According to a recent posting on its website, the long-established and globally renowned resource for all matters concerning wine, London-based Decanter, has paid a visit to Dubrovnik to sample the local wine, wineries and restaurants.
Starting out at exclusive Fish Restaurant Proto, where she tucked into the six-course dégustation menu with wine pairings of a white Malvasija, a deep-red Plavac mali and a sweet prošek to finish, Decanter expert Jane Foster then headed to Fratellos Prosecco bar. There, along with some live jazz, she enjoyed what is becoming a new trend around Croatia, domestic sparkling wine, setting aside the better-known Italian variety for a glass from the award-winning Jagunić winery from Plešivica.
As part of her wine-packed weekend, on the Saturday she tried out the Trattoria Carmen, which also specialises in wine pairings, before a trip to the Crvik winery. Its Vilin Ples 2017, a blend of Plavac, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, won Decanter’s own prestigious World Wine Gold Medal in 2021.
Back in Dubrovnik for the Saturday evening, Jane treated herself to a meal at the excellent Azur restaurant right in the Old Town. Along with superb Asian-Croatian fusion cuisine rustled up by amiable chef-owner Darko Perojević, she was justifiably advised to pair it with a well-chosen young white Graševina by Galić from Kutjevo, Slavonia.
On the Sunday, Jane headed out of town again to explore Pelješac, and the long-renowned Miloš winery there, stopping off for some fresh oysters sold by the roadside, washed down with a glass of crisp white Pošip.
Her weekend concluded with lunch at family-run Bota Šare, and more Plavac mali alongside a classic Dalmatian seafood dish.
