A perfect combination of modernity and tradition, Croatia’s second-largest city Split is a perfect spot to experience the Dalmatian way of living.
There are many reasons why we fell in love with the vibrant city of Split. From the beautiful architecture that dates back to Roman times to panoramic views from Marjan Hill, Split has it all. Moreover, it’s a great base for memorable day trips to nearby towns and islands. Here are our top five reasons why we love visiting Split. We’re sure you will love it, too!
1.Split’s historical charm
Split is a town with a rich history. Just a stroll around the Old Town will reveal a great number of treasures. The Riva promenade is a must-visit and the best starting point for your exploration. From there, you can witness the grandeur of Diocletian’s Palace, the summer residence of Roman Emperor Diocletian.
Visit the Peristil, the historic square where you will see the Cathedral of St Dominus, an ancient Egyptian sphinx and maybe even meet some Roman soldiers.
Wander the Old Town’s labyrinthine alleys, see all the famous statues and marvel at the amazing ancient architecture.
All these attractions are within walking distance of each other and they are to be explored by foot. You’ll only need one afternoon for Old Town sightseeing.
2.Gourmet dining in Split
Its coastal location and Mediterranean climate influence the culinary delights of Split. However, you can taste cuisines from all over the world.
We definitely recommend savouring traditional favourites. Dalmatian prosciutto and cheese are great appetisers. You should try the pašticada beef dish, brudet fish soup stew, octopus salad or black risotto, too. Don’t skip on the fritule either, small-bite pastries especially popular at festive occasions.
3.Amazing day trips from Split
If you’re staying in Split for a few days, it’s a great base for various day trips. You can take a ride to the UNESCO-protected Old Town of Trogir and make a stop for wine tasting in Kaštela. If you don’t mind a longer car journey, popular Dubrovnik is 2.5 hours away.
Since Split is well-connected with the nearby islands, you can sail to Brač, Hvar or Šolta. We highly recommend the Blue Cave on Vis island and Hvar town tours by private speedboat.
To explore inland natural wonders, we recommend the National Parks of Krka and Plitvice Lakes.
4.Split’s vibrant nightlife
Split has a vivid nightlife and people from all over the world come to Split to party. The Riva promenade is always buzzing with terrace cafés and eateries. Many clubs in town pound out pulsating electronic beats to dance til dawn. Every July, Split hosts the Ultra Europe Festival.
5.Luxury accommodation in Split
You can find plenty of luxury accommodation in the Split area. You can stay at luxury villas with private pools and amazing sea views, beachfront rentals or cosy apartments in the Old Town.
Villa Richness with a heated pool is located in one of the most desirable areas of Split. This contemporary villa is near the city centre, beach and restaurants. Yet it keeps you hidden in privacy, surrounded by thick greenery.
Beachfront Villa The View with an infinity pool is located in Kaštela, only a few steps from the sea and 15 minutes’ drive from Split. It’s modern and elegantly decorated, with lots of natural light and views of the sea and islands.
