Hardy locals, men and women, braved the chilly waters of Lake Jarun to take their traditional communal dip to celebrate the New Year in Zagreb.
Thankfully, temperatures were relatively mild, with even glimpses of sunshine, as swimmers donned bathing caps and costumes to join a curious swan gliding past the seasonal scene.
This man-made lake in the west of the capital is not the only place in Croatia where New Year is marked by a mass plunge. In Zadar, bathers jumped into the Adriatic from the Riva embankment at noon exactly on New Year’s Day, some wearing Santa hats left over from the Christmas party.
