In what must be the most stunning attraction of all the Advent celebrations around Croatia, an ice rink has been created within the Roman Arena in Pula. The most famous historic site in Istria, this superbly preserved ancient monument is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and is located right in the city centre.

Staging all kinds of events year-round, including big-name concerts, gladiatorial battles and the Pula Film Festival, the Arena now provides the atmospheric backdrop for skaters during Advent in Pula, until January 6. Entry into the auditorium is free though a fee applies if you want to take to the ice.

Elsewhere in Pula, the town promenade has been turned into a magic forest, where children will find Santa Claus himself, and his family. Shows, concerts and performances will be taking place across the city centre – check the Facebook page for details.

Note that during Advent, paid parking zones in the Pula area are free on weekdays after 5pm and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Advent celebrations are now taking place across Croatia, the most wide-ranging in Zagreb and Dubrovnik.
