Thousands turned out to witness the 40th running of the Opatija balinjerada, a crazy carnival of bizarre vehicles driven by locals in costumes. Spectators line the streets along the route from Paris to Slatina – between a famous hotel and a district of Opatija – to see the traditional rally, held in bright winter sunshine.
The tiny-wheeled vehicles are custom-made and often themed in tandem with the participants. The event sets a different tone to other carnivals in Croatia, most notably Rijeka’s huge parade due to take place this week on February 19.
