Showcasing trailblazing Croatian and international artists, the recently opened exhibition Futures traces how art has been used to imagine the future throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Novi Zagreb, the show will be on display until December.
From the aptly named Futurist movement in the 1930s and the counter culture of the 1960s, artistic expression has long been used as a laboratory to experiment with new ideas of how society could look. Often combining painting, sculpture, optical illusions and video art, the pieces here search for newness in both their message and in unique combinations of form and technique. This painstakingly curated show collects these avant-garde pieces and compares and contrasts them, showing how as history progressed, so did the future.
The final section is dedicated to contemporary artists. Contrasting the often dystopian or apocalyptic images of the future seen frequently in popular culture, these artworks strive towards a more positive vision of tomorrow, where current ecological, political and social crises have been overcome.
