Garnering awards from Paris to Pula, the debut full-length feature by Dubravka Turić, Traces, will represent Croatia in the Best International Film category at next year’s Oscars. So far, Croatia has had little luck since first putting its films forward as an independent nation in 1991, failing to make the final cut of five nominees.
Now hopes rest on Turić, a film editor by trade, whose short works have been screened at Sundance, Venice and Sarajevo. Traces (Tragovi) focuses on a lonely scientist (Marija Škaričić) seeking symbolic meaning in her family past following the death of her father.
