On November 2, we’re giving you a taste of Cologne in London. That’s right, Hotboozapalooza is back with an international spin. Try four delicious warmed-up twists on your favourite boozy drinks inspired by Salzburg, Prague, Krakow and Cologne for just £20. Taking place on an outdoor terrace, the event will have you dancing to feel-good tunes and sampling delicacies from around Europe. There will even be designated activities for each city. Buy tickets here.

If you love Christmas as much as us (and we adore it), you’ll want to book a trip to one – if not all – of these markets in Cologne.

1. Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral

Best for: Traditional celebrations in a historical setting

This Unesco World Heritage Site is Germany's largest cathedral, the world’s third tallest, and it’s more than 765 years old. It’s also the country’s most visited landmark, with more than six million visitors each year. The south transept window consists of more than 11,000 colourful glass squares, which makes it a stunning backdrop for pursuing traditional wares. In the centre of proceedings, a massive decorated Christmas tree towers over the stalls. Sample the selected handicrafts and organic culinary delicacies, while enjoying a diverse stage programme featuring more than 100 free events.

Open Nov 23 to Dec 23 (closed Nov 26). Sun-Wed 11am to 9pm, Thu-Fri 11am to 10pm, Sat 10am to 10pm.

2. Heinzels Winter Fairytale – Cologne Old Town

Best for: Fairytale-inspired fun

Found in Cologne's old town, Heinzels Winter Fairytale is an homage to the Heinzelmännchen, the friendly gnome-like spirits of local legend who help lazy craftsmen with their work in the Old Town at night. More than a hundred stalls are split into different themed laneways and piazzas, while wood carvers, blacksmiths, confectioners and artisans from across Europe showcase their skills. And of course, you’ve got traditional and regional specialities to feast upon as you admire their handiwork. The biggest draw has to be the spectacular ice rink on the Heumarkt, which is fun for visitors of all ages.

Alter Markt open Nov 24 to Dec 23 (closed Nov 26). Heumarkt (including ice rink) open Nov 24 to Jan 7 2024 (closed Nov 24 and 26, and Christmas Day). 11am to 10pm. From Boxing Day, 11am to 9pm.

3. Market of Angels

Best for: Soaking up all the stars

Prepare to be dazzled by countless glowing stars and fairy lights in the trees, which create a special atmosphere that’s undeniably Christmassy. Taking place at Neumarkt, a central spot near the larger shopping streets, the Market of Angels presents itself as an enchanting Christmas wonderland thanks to its elaborate decor. As well as staring at gorgeously designed houses, illuminated mythical creatures on stilts and magical angels, you can explore an exciting array of culinary stands. New for this year, one of Cologne’s most hyped new chefs, Maximilian Lorenz, will be popping up with an exclusive food concept that is yet to be revealed.

Open Nov 20 to Dec 23 (closed Nov 26). Sun-Thu 11am to 9pm, Fri-Sat 11am to 10pm, Fri Dec 23, 11am to 9pm.

4. Nicholas Village at Rudolfplatz

Best for: Medieval festive browsing

Found in the shadow of Hahnentorburg (Hahnen Gate), a castle-like structure that dates all the way back to the thirteenth century, Nicholas Village at Rudolfplatz is just a stone’s throw from the trendy Belgian Quarter. That makes it a pretty cool combination of old and new influences. Just a ten-minute walk from the Market of Angels (you can easily do both in one night), it combines the German version known as St. Nicholas with the international Santa Claus with his reindeer and elves. There’s also a massive advent calendar and a village chapel, which create a magical, cosy atmosphere that’s appealing to kids and adults alike.

Open Nov 20 to Dec 23 (closed Nov 26). Sun-Thu 11am to 9pm, Fri-Sat 11am to 10pm.

5. Harbour Christmas market at the Chocolate Museum

Best for: Pirates and post-Christmas shopping

Perched next to the Chocolate Museum, right on the Rhine, this Christmas market decorates the modern harbourside with 70 stalls in snow-white pagoda tents reminiscent of ships’ sails. It’s fitting, then, that the entertainment comes from shanties and pirates. Meanwhile, the Lighthouse Spelunke acts as a signifier for fun and festive antics with its luminous top. Another highlight is the 48-metre ferris wheel piercing the skyline, which offers views of the city, cathedral and, of course, the Christmasmarket. Keep an eye out for interesting food vendors, which come interspersed with handicrafts and hot mulled wine, with a real three-masted wooden ship topping off the maritime vibes. Oh, and from December 26 to January 7, the Christmas market will be transformed into a New Year’s market so you can keep the good times rolling.

Open Nov 23 to Dec 23 (feast day Nov 26 from 6pm to 10pm). New Year’s Market open from Dec 26 to Jan 7, 2024. Daily noon-8pm (Dec 31 until 1am). Sun-Thu 11am to 9pm, Fri-Sat 11am to 10pm.

6. Christmas market at the Stadtgarten

Best for: Fashionable gift buying

This market takes place in Cologne's oldest park, on the edge of the Belgian Quarter. It’s a trendy spot, so you can expect only the finest fashion, art and jewellery to match. There are more than 90 changing exhibitors in total, which means you’ll find the usual aromatic candles, Christmascards and toys mixed in with pop-up kitchens serving mouthwatering fare – perfect for post-purchase refuelling. You’ll also find a large selection of events there, including live music to sing along to and activities designed just for kids.

Open Nov 20 to Dec 23 (feast day Nov 26, 6pm to 10pm). Mon-Fri 4pm to 9.30pm, Sat-Sun noon to 9.30pm.
