Labor Day weekend is a fitting occasion to launch the new visitor center at the Pullman National Monument and Pullman State Historic Site, located at the site of the former Pullman company town. Inside guests will find a new exhibit chronicling the neighborhood's crucial role in U.S. labor history, from the 1894 Pullman strike to the civil rights struggles of the Black Pullman Porters, who went on to form the first major Black labor union. At this weekend's opening celebration, visitors will also have a chance to tour three Pullman-built rail cars, which will be towed in via the Metra Electric Line for the duration of the event. Tickets are donation-based, with proceeds benefitting the Historic Pullman Foundation.
