There are many reasons to live in Hyde Park outside of attending and teaching classes at the University of Chicago, and these homes prove it. The rents are fairly cheap, the floor plans are spacious and the places are within close proximity to great eats, awesome beaches and a lovely collection of lakefront parks, including Promontory Point. Though rentals in Hyde Park are numerous, a fair amount tend to cater to students on a budget or tenured professors with a cushy salary. We went digging to find affordable homes that are a little bit in between.

5135 S Kenwood Ave, Apt #502: $2,100 / month

This three-bed, two-bath apartment spans two floors connected by a spiral staircase. And across from that staircase in the sunny living room is a fireplace. Talk about fancy! The duplex design efficiently splits the public and living spaces. The rooms aren't terribly huge, but what they lack in space, they make up with charm and nice views from the windows. A home like this in Wicker Park or Lakeview would easily tack on an additional $500 to the monthly rent.

5121 S Kenwood Ave: $2750 / month

Another, more spacious gem lies just a few houses down the block. This is one case where a few roommates can go a long way. The home has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a positively enormous living room with a stylish fireplace. Just off the living room is an equally huge dining room as well as a sunroom. Colors tend to stick on the lighter side throughout, with bright hardwood floors and white cabinets and appliances in the kitchen. This apartment might be nearly 100 years old, but it doesn't look the part one bit.

5217 S Greenwood Ave, Apt #G: $2,300 / month

Living underground doesn't look this good too often. This attractive four-bed, 3.5-bath garden apartment may not have the window real estate of most Chicago apartments, but it does have loads of style—and in-unit laundry. The warm hardwood floors go a long way to brighten up the place and matching wood cabinets in the kitchen give a nice, home-y touch. Recessed lighting runs through most of the public areas and the bedrooms are each sizable. One bedroom comes with a pretty huge closet as well.
