Orson Welles famously caused some panic among listeners with his 1938 radio broadcast of H.G. Wells's alien invasion novel, The War of the Worlds—thankfully, these days we're a little more accustomed to realistic stories about extraterrestrial encounters. Local company Theatre in the Dark is staging a streaming audio adaptation of the Martian takeover, moving the setting to present-day Chicagoland where a group of characters are fighting to survive. Performed by actors across the U.S. and accompanied by music and sound effects, A War of the World updates the classic radio drama for the streaming era, presenting live performances six times a week.
