As it did last year, Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre again dominated the list of nominees for the Non-Equity Joseph Jefferson Awards, announced Tuesday night. The company received 15 nominations, including six for its production of the musical Rent and four for A Marvin Hamlisch Songbook.
Rent's six noms were matched by Bailiwick Chicago's musical Murder Ballad and by the new play Byhalia, Mississippi, a co-production of the New Colony and Definition Theatre Company. Also showing strong with five nominations a piece were Kokandy Productions' Heathers: The Musical and Loving Repeating, Griffin Theatre Company's Pocatello and Oracle Productions' The Hairy Ape.
The Jeff Awards' Non-Equity Wing honors work that's not produced under contract with Actors' Equity Association. Between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016, Jeff committee members considered 148 productions by 67 non-Equity companies. In the end, the nominations are spread across 53 productions from 32 producing companies, which the committee says is a record high. The complete list of nominations follows. The 2016 Non-Equity Jeff Awards will be presented Monday, June 6, at Park West.
