The Mexican makeover this place got doesn’t do much to cover up its former life as a diner: The stools and booths may be vibrant thanks to a few coats of bright paint, but the old-school feel remains. Still, you’ll find nary a burger or fries on this menu, which focuses on the cuisine of its namesake, a small town high in the Mexican mountains. Don’t miss the Tilapia Tanzitaro—the dish, tender tilapia topped with a bright combination of jalapeños and olives, is a recipe that’s been passed on through generations of the owner’s family, and for good reason. You could go for the flan for dessert, but it’s better to peruse the Guatemalan section of the menu and order the bean-stuffed, sugar-sprinkled plantains (rellenitos) instead.
