Abuelo’s Mexican Grill (CLOSED)

With a counter made from recycled corrugated steel and walls neatly decorated with National Geographic covers, this is one of the few cheap-eats destinations that can honestly be described as cute. The piled-high sopes and tortas are pretty good looking, too, layered with enough avocado and hot sauce to hide pasty masa and dryish chicken. And the pastry case holds rice pudding and tequila-mousse almost too pretty to eat. But it’s the fish and shrimp tacos that really got us taking this place seriously.
