Have no fear, Malört pie is here.

Logan Square’s Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits has just launched your new favorite (or least favorite) pie flavor—Malört Meringue. The ambitious combination of Jeppson’s grapefruit Malört curd, crumbly graham cracker crust and smoked meringue topping is sure to generate buzz amongst loyalists and naysayers alike.

Celebrating its 90th year of business, the infamous Chicago liqueur remains a controversial subject for many—with celebrities like Drake and Kelly Clarkson weighing in on the elixir last year—and continues to ride a line between beloved and despised.

Nevertheless, Malört has gotten creative by expanding beyond the shelves of a traditional tavern. In addition to the pie, Epic Deli in McHenry launched a Malört-eggnog soft serve ice cream in 2022. And some are still reeling from the limited edition Malört croutons in 2023, a partnership between Jeppson’s and Kooshy Croutons.

For those not keen on Malört's bitter grapefruit flavor profile, Jeppson's has also been experimenting with new flavors. Last year, the company offered Malörtsgiving, a seasonal take featuring flavors like turkey bouillon, cranberry and sage, and a special pumpkin spice Malört sold at West Loop’s CH Distillery. If you still haven't been converted, well, there's no telling what Jeppson's plans to come up with this year.

For now, grab a slice at Bang Bang—available for pickup or delivery—and pay your respects to the latest iteration of Chicago's classic spirit.
