Back in October, Walgreens announced the closure of 1,200 unprofitable stores around the U.S. In Chicago specifically, five Walgreens locations will shut down between February 17 and February 27, all of them on the South Side.
Here is a list of the stores that will be closing:
- 3405 S. King Dr. in Bronzeville
- 4005 W. 26th St. in Little Village
- 7111 S. Western Ave. in Chicago Lawn
- 7109 S. Jeffery Blvd. South Shore
- 9148 S. Commercial Ave. in South Chicago
"Our retail pharmacy business is central to our go-forward business strategy. However, increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing and supply needs," Walgreens spokesperson Marty Maloney said in a statement to Block Club Chicago. "It is never an easy decision to close a store. We know that our stores are important to the communities that we serve, and therefore do everything possible to improve the store performance. When closures are necessary, like those here in Chicago, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions."
Walgreens isn't the only retailer shutting down stores across the country. Kohl's is closing two locations in the Chicago suburbs, and GameStop, Big Lots and Party City are all either downsizing or going out of business.
