Following in the footsteps of the New York Marathon and the Boston Marathon, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon won't be happening this year in light of the dangers posed by large gatherings. Organizers announced the event's cancelation this morning and revealed plans to host a "virtual experience to recognize the dedication and commitment of everyone who would have taken part."

The 43rd edition of the Chicago Marathon was scheduled to take place on October 11, welcoming more than 45,000 runners from around the world to a 26.2-mile course that winds through the city. Participants who registered for the 2020 race will be able to receive a refund or defer their entry to a future edition of the Chicago Marathon in 2021, 2022 or 2023.

Founded in 1977, the only other time the Chicago Marathon has been canceled was in 1987, when Beatrice Foods dropped out as the race's title sponsor (the G. Heileman Brewing Company stepped in to sponsor the 1988 edition of the race, dubbed the Old Style Chicago Marathon).

With many runners already deep into their training schedule, it's disappointing (though not unexpected) that they won't be crossing the finish line in Grant Park this fall—but there's nothing stopping participants from running a DIY marathon with a couple of friends in October.
