Chicago is poised for a record-breaking summer travel season in 2025, with a surge in both air travel and tourism activities. Airlines have scheduled nearly 17.8 million departing seats from Chicago's airports between June and August, marking a 7% increase over the previous year and a 4% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, according to an official city news release. O'Hare and Midway airports will connect travelers to approximately 265 destinations worldwide, up from 250 last summer, reinforcing Chicago's status as a global aviation hub.
Couple those stats with American and United Airlines' announcements regarding expansion plans at O'Hare and Chicagoans can start bracing themselves for a pretty hectic travel season come this summer.
“We are thrilled to welcome our biggest summer of air service yet at Chicago’s airports,” said CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee in an official statement. “With expanded routes, new airline investments and continued enhancements to concessions and amenities, we are ensuring that O’Hare and Midway remain among the most connected, efficient and passenger-friendly airports in the world.”
The city's event calendar is brimming with festivals and concerts that are set to draw large crowds. Lollapalooza, one of Chicago's most anticipated music festivals, will take place from July 31 to August 3 at Grant Park. This year's lineup features headliners such as Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler, the Creator, Sabrina Carpenter, Rüfüs Du Sol, Luke Combs, Twice, A$AP Rocky and Korn. Additional acts include Gracie Abrams, Doechii, Clairo, Djo, and many more. Notably, Tyler, the Creator returns after canceling his appearance the previous year.
In addition to Lollapalooza, the city will host a variety of cultural and music festivals. The Chicago Blues Festival is scheduled for June 5-8, celebrating the city's rich blues heritage. The Chicago Air and Water Show, a favorite among locals and tourists alike, is set for August 16-17, featuring thrilling aerial and water-based performances. Jazz enthusiasts can look forward to the Chicago Jazz Festival from August 28-31, highlighting both legendary and emerging jazz talents. Food lovers won't want to miss the Taste of Chicago from September 5-7, offering a culinary journey through the city's diverse food scene.
For those planning to navigate Chicago’s busy summer travel season, we suggest planning ahead and booking early, using public transportation as much as possible and trying your best to arrive early at airports and events. Happy (almost!) travel season, folks!
