Just a kid from Chicago.
From the hardwood at Simeon Career Academy in Chatham to the roaring sold-out crowds at the United Center, Derrick Rose is Chicago personified; his life is a story of love, determination and a lot of heart.
Rose announced his retirement from professional basketball on September 26, 2024, concluding a remarkable 16-year career that inspired millions worldwide.
But the fans don't just admire Rose's highlights on the basketball court; they resonate deeply with his purpose, finding inspiration in his journey and aligning it with their own personal battles.
During the Chicago Bulls vs. New York Knicks game this past Saturday, the United Center came alive with joy for “Derrick Rose Night," an evening honoring the hometown legend.
The halftime ceremony featured many tributes from former teammates, including Joakim Noah, who called Rose the "MVP of Chicago."
With heartfelt words, Rose thanked Chicago, his family and his fans, reflecting on a journey filled with resilience and triumph.
The Bulls will immortalize the hometown hero—the organization announced it will retire his iconic No. 1 jersey.
This historic honor cements Rose's legacy as one of the all-time greats in Bulls history, joining the ranks of legends before him. The official jersey retirement ceremony is set for next season, with the exact date and details still under wraps.
This past weekend, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that the city has officially declared January 4 as “Derrick Rose Day” in recognition of Rose's legacy, dedication and ongoing efforts to give back to the Englewood community.
Adidas Basketball also rolled out the red carpet for Rose, bringing Chicago together to celebrate one of its own with multiple events throughout the week, each reflecting Rose's remarkable journey and deep ties to the community he loves.
Rose's Flower Shop
Rose and Adidas transformed River North's Tortoise Supper Club into a one-day flower pop-up, which blossomed with gratitude and appreciation. Thousands of fans wrapped around several blocks for the chance to send a free bouquet of roses and capture a Polaroid moment with Rose himself.
Fans were invited to express their gratitude by sending flowers to those who had a meaningful impact on their life journey. The event was a collaboration with West Loop florist Planks & Pistils.
Freddie and Emily, both from Sydney, Australia, had planned on flying into town to attend the Bulls vs. Knicks game honoring Rose even before the pop-up was announced.
"We're big fans of Derrick Rose. The minute we saw these amazing things, we had to try for a chance to see him," Freddie said.
Becoming a Rose
In collaboration with Adidas Basketball, Rose turned the spotlight back on Chicago and his fans with the debut of Becoming a Rose, a short film he co-directed that doubled as a heartfelt thank-you note to his fans.
The film premiered at a private screening at Soho House Chicago in the West Loop. It serves as a love letter to the city that shaped him, the streets that taught him resilience and the people who stood by him. Several of Rose's family members make an appearance in the film.
"Roses need water and sunlight to grow, but this Rose needed a city," Rose's son, "PJ," narrates at the start of the film.
Acclaimed director Carlyle Garrick shared his insights on working with the NBA-veteran-turned-filmmaker, calling him a "director's dream" for his passion and collaborative spirit.
"I think nobody's story is truly only about them," Garrick said. "Derrick was adamant about featuring people in every scene who meant something to him, from the kids he mentored at the park to the barbershop where he grew up. He honored all those who helped him get to where he is, no matter how high or low that place may be.”
Simeon Alumni Game
Rose returned to where it all began: The gym at Simeon Career Academy. Hundreds of fans packed the bleachers, eager to witness the Bulls legend take the court again, not just as the MVP player they grew up idolizing but also as a father sharing the spotlight playing along with his son, Derrick "PJ" Rose Jr.
The energy in the gym was electric, filled with nostalgia, pride and admiration for the hometown hero who continues to inspire generations.
The night also recognized the 1984 Simeon basketball team and other alumni in a student game featuring Rose and his son. Rose won the game with a free throw to break a 24-24 tie.
He ended the night thanking his friends and family who have supported him throughout his career and personal life.
Roses for Chicago
Adidas Basketball transformed Clybourn Park into a floral masterpiece, celebrating Rose in partnership with New York artist Mr. Flower Fantastic.
"Retirement is the end of one chapter, but it's the beginning of another. He still has a lot more to give and we'll be right alongside him for that journey," said Paul Weber, senior marketing director of Adidas Basketball.
Fans who visited the installation immersed themselves in the tribute and took home exclusive Adidas x Derrick Rose merchandise. Each also received a single rose, a symbolic keepsake to commemorate the occasion.
