Chief Keef returned to perform in the Chicago area for the first time in over a decade this past weekend.
Keef made his long-awaited appearance closing the final night of the Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash Festival.
The South Side native, whose real name is Keith Cozart, performed with his daughter, Kay Kay, in a joyful Father’s Day set. He was also joined on stage at one point by fellow Chicago rapper G Herbo.
Over the years, Keef has been plagued by legal and political obstacles that prevented him from performing locally. The last time he played in Chicagoland was at Lollapalooza in 2012.
Keef is widely considered one of the most influential rappers of all time, recognized for pioneering drill music in Chicago. He delighted thousands of festival-goers with hits like "Faneto," "Love Sosa" and "I Don't Like."
Summer Smash was co-created by Lyrical Lemonade, the multimedia platform that's garnered over 22 million YouTube subscribers and over 11 billion channel views. Chicago concert production company SPKRBX is also a co-founder of the event.
According to Complex, Lyrical Lemonade, SPKRBX and GMGT Management, along with help from Blackish creator Kenya Barris, are working together on a documentary about Keef’s historic return.
