The list of bars and restaurants that have been forced to close due to COVID-19 continues to grow—and the latest addition really hurts. Lakeview's Southport Lanes announced today that it will permanently shutter on Sunday, September 27.
The 98-year-old boozy bowling alley and billiards hall has an illustrious history in Chicago. It was built back in 1900 by the Schlitz Brewing Company and has lived many lives since, including incarnations as a speakeasy, a brothel, a gambling facility, a beer hall and a polling place. The building underwent significant remodels in 1991 and again in 2003, and these days, Southport Lanes is a beloved neighborhood joint that specializes in craft beer and pub grub with a side of bowling and billiards.
Fans and supporters are invited to say farewell over the next 10 days: Southport Lanes is still serving beer and food on its sidewalk patio and offering limited indoor seating. Unfortunately, the bowling lanes and pool tables remain closed due to safety concerns. Stop by Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from noon to 11pm and Sunday from noon to 10pm.
