Can't wait for one of Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirror Rooms to go on display in Chicago next month? While you're waiting for the August 17 debut of the wndr museum, which will house Kusama's reflective work, you can check out a new art installation that uses mirrors and neon lights to create the illusion of an infinite tunnel.
On Saturday, July 28, Chilean artist Iván Navarro's installation "This Land is Your Land" will make its Chicago appearance in Polk Bros Park. Made up of three structures that look like water towers, guests can situate themselves under each tower's eight-foot-tall support to reveal a mirrored interior outfitted with neon lights. One of the pieces depicts a neon ladder than appears to ascend endlessly upward, while another displays the words "We" and "Me" perpetually repeating.
The works are inspired by Navarro's immigration from Chile to New York City and inspired by a set of lyrics from the Woody Guthrie song from which the installation takes its name. The visual interpretation of the stanza “this land was made for you and me” expresses the artists hope that immigrants will continue to have access to America and the opportunities it holds.
The new installation is part of a collaboration between Navy Pier, the annual EXPO Chicago event (which will fill Navy Pier's festival hall with art from September 27 through 30) and New York's Paul Kasmin Gallery. "This Land is Your Land" will remain on display in Polk Bros Park through April 30, 2019.
