Jules Born and Baba Ali, both in their early 20s, go under the name Voices of Black and are potentially something quite special. The two craft and croon cosmic-tropical tunes of soulful, melodic electro dreams with copious vocal samples. The layering of lyrics, rhythms and bits of retro-futurist funk are unique and intuitive. We hear traces of Dam-Funk, Chromatics and Toro Y Moi—no easy mix to perfect, but casual and cool here. The duo is signed to Gold Panda's Notown label. With a name like Golf Clap, the opening twosome is definitely on a sophisticated tip, with tongue certainly touching cheek. The Detroit deep house newcomers keep it delicate and soulful. While the country club apparel might be in jest, the throwback groves are no joke.
