Valentine's Day has the potential to be "just another day" or a supremely depressing night of self-examination. Whether you're spending the greeting card holiday alone or with a significant other, Chicago's best dance clubs and music venues have stepped up to the plate with some great ways to spend the evening. Never mind flowers—why not take your main squeeze to see a costumed metal band from Finland? We've gathered a list of the best concerts and parties taking place on (and around) Valentine's Day.

Even if you're without a main squeeze on this greeting card holiday, you can enjoy "An Evening of Aural Intercourse" at the 11th annual Hideout Makeout Party. An orchestra of local musicians will gather and work their way through a selection of original music, film soundtracks and love songs.

Cry your eyes out while belting out a tearful rendition of Otis Redding's "These Arms Of Mine" at Another Sad Love Song Karaoke. Come alone (or bring your valentine) and enjoy $2 Old Styles (perfect for catching your tears in) while listening to some mournful tunes. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the Chicago Women's Health Center.

Spend Valentine's Day remembering the music of David Bowie with this tribute to the Starman's wonderfully androgynous and accepting world view. Here's hoping that the show includes a rendition of Bowie's cover of Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy," which contains the classic line, "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return."

The Empty Bottle marks the most romantic day of the year with a dance party, featuring sci-fi rockabilly outfit Super Sonic Space Rebels, throwback punks the Lizzies and alt-country tunes from Bremer and the No Goods. If you really want to make the night special, you can reserve a table for two at the adjacent Bite Cafe. Proceeds from this show will benefit Rape Victims Advocates.

What says "I love you" more than melodic heavy metal performed by middle-aged guys dressed as monsters? Finnish shock rockers Lordi might seem like GWAR devotees, but the costumed band's music actually has more in common with the grandiose prog of Swedish metal group Ghost. If your significant other can stomach an evening of loud music accompanied by fake blood and gore, they must be "the one."
