Saturday's lineup at North Coast Music Festival seemed like an experiment for the Labor Day weekend event. With acts like D’Angelo and the Roots anchoring the main stages, the booking seemed as if it was geared toward a slightly older audience than the traditionally EDM-centric music festival usually attracts.
Bodies packed the field for Chromeo's late afternoon set, which found the duo turning in energetic electro-pop beats from its latest release. A similarly large audience greeted the Roots, who slotted renditions of "Jungle Boogie" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" into its selection of original tracks.
By the time D'Angelo and his band took the stage, the crowd had thinned considerably, as younger attendees filtered over to Steve Aoki's headlining set on the other side of the park. The illusive neo-soul singer and guitarist delivered a mesmerizing show, digging into expansive renditions of tracks from last year's Black Messiah. Those who stuck around were able to witness an R&B legend, but if North Coast is trying to grow up and attract an older audience, it will need to book a few more comparable talents next year.
