The weather gods must dig bass. Despite forecasts and unlike last year, when torrential rain fell on Union Park on the first day of North Coast, the air was muggy but sweet. Not exactly the sudden hellstorm that ruined Passion Pit's set and delayed activities in 2013. As much as we enjoy watching people flail about in the mud, we'd rather watch DJs like Bassnectar and Alesso dry. Neither made Forbes' recent list of the 14 highest paid DJs in the world, but the two have a sizable and colorful following. They went head to head to close Friday on the 312 and 630 stages, respectively (the five stages are named after Chicagoland area codes).
Bassnectar fans in particular sport the costumes we come to expect at this panoply. We spotted palm trees, Adventure Time characters and, er, some tie-dye Lollapalooza shirts. Other notable acts included Aussie crooner Chet Faker, foodie rapper Action Bronson and Portlandia theme man Washed Out. Check out photos from day one.
