Just three days before he passed away in 2006, hip-hop producer J Dilla released his sophomore album, Donuts—a 31-track collection of instrumental compositions cobbled together from samples ripped from crates of 45s. In the years since its release, this collection of tracks has achieved an almost mystical status, closely studied by budding DJs and continuously referenced in contemporary hip-hop. In honor of Dilla's birthday, Sidewalk Chalk keyboardist Charlie Coffeen will lead an all-star band (featuring Makaya McCraven and Braxton Cook) in a live reinterpretation of Donuts at Thalia Hall. Show up to pay tribute to Dilla and gain a new perspective on his chopped-up beats and hooks.
