Most operas are performed in Italian, German and French, usually corresponding to the native tongue of the original composer. So it's a pretty big deal that the Lyric Opera is presenting its first Spanish-language work during its mainstage opera season, staging a contemporary opera written by Daniel Catán and Marcela Fuentes-Berain. Florencia en el Amazonas follows an opera diva on her journey by boat to her hometown in Brazil, where she hopes to perform at a local opera house and reunited with a former lover. The Lyric's production is directed by Francesca Zambello, who collaborated with Catán and Fuentes-Berain in developing the opera (and was behind the Lyric's recent production of West Side Story).
