There's a jazz revival afoot in the U.K. and Ezra Collective is just one of the groups at the forefront of the movement. On its debut album, You Can't Steal My Joy, the quintet (which met through a jazz-focused youth program) seems more concerned with exploring the genre than staying reverent to it, frequently cribbing the stylistic flourishes of Afrobeat and hip-hop. Just like contemporaries such as Kamasi Washington and BadBadNotGood, Ezra Collective's interpretation of jazz doesn't just want to make you tap your toe—you can dance if you want to. Local R&B singer-songwriter Kiara Lanier opens the show.
