Cuban pianist and bandleader Chucho Valdés is a Latin jazz legend, with a career that spans five decades and has yielded plenty of Grammy hardware. Last year, Valdés revisited his 1972 album Jazz Batá, on which he performed as part of an experimental trio that prominently featured a percussionist playing an hourglass-shaped drum called the batá. On Jazz Batá 2, Valdés returns to playing with a small group and once again focuses on the discreet rhythms of the batá drum, drawing melodic inspiration from the versatile instrument. At this free Millennium Park Summer Music Series concert, Valdés is joined by local guitarist Fareed Haque who will perform the music of Haitain-American composer Franz Casseus.
