Chicago Opera Theater, the smaller, cooler opera company in town, offers up Duke Ellington’s self-proclaimed “street opera,” Queenie Pie. The Duke's only opera mixes his trademark big band jazz with musical theater. The work was left unfinished, as he worked on it from 1967 to his death in 1974. Suffice it to say, it's not your great-great-grandaddy's Wagner.
