The four women who make up CHAI hail from Japan, often wear matching jumpsuits and have been known to hang out with gigantic Japanese pop stars like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. But this quartet isn't belting out processed four-part harmonies atop layers of synthesizers—CHAI is a rock band on a mission. Assembled during the pandemic, the band's latest album, WINK, explores the sounds of hip-hop and R&B, pairing the CHAI with Chicago rapper Ric Wilson and Los Angeles producer Mndsgn. The resulting music maintains the group's infectious energy, while find new rhythms and sounds to underpin CHAI's fun-loving message of empowerment. South Korean singer-songwriter Su Lee opens the show.
