Fall is a great time to be a kid in Chicago. There's trick-or-treating, sure, but it's more than that. As the temperature drops and the leaves change colors, little ones get ansty with excitement for the holidays to come. Feed their excitement with a lineup of fun-filled events in October. This month, attend a fall festival (there are still plenty to choose from), check out hundreds of glowing Jack-o'-lanterns, watch a spooky Halloween parade, go see the circus or get out of town when you trek out to a nearby apple orchard. There's something for every kid (and adult) on this list of things to do in October.

If you're looking to experience the best of the season, you'll have to head just outside of Chicago to a nearby apple orchrard to pick some fruit. Throughout October, the area's top orchards showcase their apple varieties—from Gala and Honeycrisp to Golden Delicious and Fuji. Plan a day trip to one of these farms to start picking.
