If you've felt exceptionally sappy, angsty or alone over the past 30 years, it may be because of the values that late filmmaker John Hughes instilled in your psyche at an early age. This spring, you can tour the estate that he was able to purchase by way of purveying those emotions on the silver screen.
Hughes's home has been chosen as the 2015 Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens, and it sticks to all of the stereotypes of a North Shore manor. The 11,233-square-foot space has seven bedrooms, six full bathrooms and sits on a 2.1-acre lot just a block away from Lake Michigan. There is a private library. There is a sizable swimming pool. There are six fireplaces. It was built in 1929 by the same architect that designed the Lincoln Park and Brookfield Zoos.
Hughes passed away in 2009. His wife Nancy listed the home for $5.89 million in 2011, but decided to donate it to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital last year.
The estate will be open to the public from April 25 through May 17. Tickets will be available online for $35 and at the door for $40.
