1. Be charmed
Find why we’re raving about Steppenwolf’s Charm. Written by Philip Dawkins and based on the real-life work of Miss Gloria Allen, the play follows Mama Darleena’s foundation of a charm school for LGBTQ youths at a Chicago community center. This isn’t your cliche “inspirational teacher” story. This show has pain, soul and laughter in its depiction of the LGBTQ community’s internal dissension and the impact of external forces. (Steppenwolf Garage, 1624 N Halsted St, 8pm. $20–$40)
“MCA: DNA: Rafael Ferrer” is the perfect antidote for the gray, dreary weather. Let the vibrant and willfully naive paintings of the process artist lift your spirits with his expressive style as you explore Ferrer’s solo exhibit. (Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E Chicago Ave, 10am–5pm, $12 suggested donation)
3. See a potty-mouthed puppet show
Spend an evening with some trash-talking puppets at iO’s long-running Wednesday night show, Felt. Manned by a raucous crew of improv vets, the adult-only improvised puppet show crosses lines with glee. Felt get’s away with vulgar, taboo material most improvisers avoid with a combo of wit, joy and puppets so cute you can’t help but laugh. (iO Del Close Theater, 1501 N Kingsbury St, 8:30pm. $5)
