The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. See a rising dance duo

Grab a ticket to see South London’s hottest electronic duo while you can. Guy and Howard Lawrence, the brothers who make up Disclosure, are bringing music from their new album, Caracal, to Navy Pier. Next time, you'll have to pay for arena tickets. (Navy Pier, Festival Hall, 600 E Grand Ave, 6pm. $36.50)

2. Go to a fantastic (and free!) film fest

The Chicago International Film Festival begins today, but for those who failed to snag an opening night ticket, the Music Box offers a quirky alternative. The one-night-only Kickstarter Film Festival presents five crowd-funded movies in two sessions featuring up-and-coming filmmakers. The inclusion of hysterical vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows, is worth price of admission alone. Oh wait, there is no price of admission. Make sure to register for your free ticket. (Music Box Theatre, 3733 N Southport Ave, 7pm screening: What We Do in the Shadows & Afronauts, 9:20pm screening: World of Tomorrow, Submarine Sandwich & T-Rex. Free)

3. Venture into the darkness

Adler Planetarium’s adult-only monthly event is darker than ever. Face your deepest fears at "Nightmare," as you ponder the beginning and end of our universe and encounter the terrifying forces of dark matter with the Dark Energy Survey. If that isn’t hair-raising enough, creepy crawlies from the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum await. (Adler Planetarium, 1300 S Lake Shore Dr, 6:30pm. $25, advanced $20)
