The three best things to do today in Chicago

1. Work out your tight five

Try out your own material or support emerging comics at pH Comedy’s pHree for All Open Mic. This friendly Andersonville room is a welcome addition to Chicago’s massive comedy scene. This first-come, first-served open mic begins signing up comics at 9pm, and the first 25 perform at 9:30pm. It’s free and BYOB, so bring some beer and have plenty of laughs. (pH Comedy Theater, 1515 W Berwyn Ave, 9:30pm. Free)

2. Get all fanshy smanshy at the Opera House

Spend a night sipping red wine sangria at the Civic Opera House, where live music and the gorgeous Art Deco venue will have you feeling like a million bucks. Lyric After Hours hosts the Zimmerman Quartet tonight and will have finger food and summery drinks. Even better, it's free to attend. (Civic Opera House, 20 N Wacker Dr, 4:30–7:30pm. Free)

3. See some effing theater

Chekhov's Seagull gets a foul-mouthed update and is one of our favorite shows running. Sideshow Theatre Company’s Stupid Fucking Bird breathes new life into an old classic in this “sort-of adaptation” we can’t recommend enough. (Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, 2433 N Lincoln Ave, 7:30pm. $20–25)
