1. Go abstract

More than 100 images of chipped paint peeling from walls and micro composed landscape shots are on display as part of Aaron Siskind’s exhibition. As the father of the Abstract Expressionist movement visitors will get to see the artwork that started it all. (Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S Michigan Ave, 10:30am. $14–$25)

2. Sing with King

This year at Taste of Chicago, Elle King will perform her bluesy pop songs like “Ex’s & Oh’s” and “America’s Sweetheart.” She’ll be joined by South African alt-rockers Kongos and pop group Transviolet. (Grant Park, 235 S Columbus Dr, 5pm. $15–$32)

3. See an Off-Broadway hit

MotherStruck! is a piece documenting writer-performer Staceyann Chin’s road to motherhood as a single lesbian from Jamaica. This performance opens the Greenhouse’s yearlong Solo Celebration and premiered at New York City’s Culture Project. (Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N Lincoln Ave, 7:30pm. $32–$48)
