1. Pick up the mic

Try your hand at comedy or watch other amateur Chicagoans give it their all at Logan Theatre’s lounge for free open mic comedy. Can't come today? No worries, this open mic night happens every Monday. (Logan Theatre, 2646 N Milwaukee Ave, 8:30pm. Free)

2. See Shakespeare for less

See Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, reimagined for the stage using a mixed cast consisting of both deaf and hearing actors in R+J: The Vineyard. A four-star production at this price is a rarity for Chicago theater. (The Den Theatre, 1329–1333 N Milwaukee Ave, 7:30pm. $10)

3. Get down to country

Steve Earle plays the kind of country music you won't find on the festival circuit—think Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt and Waylon Jennings. The 60-year-old musician plays some of his latest material tonight at City Winery. (City Winery, 1200 W Randolph St. 8pm. $50–$65)
