The Chicago International Film Festival announced its full lineup today, and as usual, the event boasts a very compelling roster of movies. The two-week festival runs next month, from October 13-27, primarily at AMC River East 21.
141 feature films were selected for the festival, 41 of which were made by first-time filmmakers, and five of whom have Chicago roots. Nearly 25 percent of the films selected were made by women, a much higher number than in Hollywood. The Chicago International Film Festival prioritizes telling stories from non-dominant narratives, including categories such as New Directors, Out-Look, ReelWomen and Black Perspectives. There's also an entire program devoted to classic and contemporary musicals.
Several films—including Neruda (Chile), The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki (Finland) and The Salesman (Iran) are their respective countries’ Oscar submissions. Plus, as previously announced, musical tribute La La Land and sci-fi drama Arrival, will open and close the festival, respectively.
