If you love the holiday season and want to hold off as long as possible before boxing up all your decorations, there's still plenty of time to recycle your Christmas tree with the help of the Chicago Park District. From January 3 to January 21, city residents can drop off their trees at 24 different park district locations throughout the city.
Trees can be dropped off inside tree corals at any of the sites, and six locations will also have free mulch available for residents beginning January 3. Sites offering free mulch are Warren Park, 6601 N Western Ave; North Park Village, 5801 N Pulaski Road; Mount Greenwood Park, 3721 W 111th St; Margate Park, 4921 N Marine Drive; Lincoln Park, Cannon Drive at Fullerton Ave (east of Cannon); and the forestry site at 900 E 103rd St.
Residents can still put their old Christmas trees out for garbage pickup, but recycling trees helps divert waste from landfills and that has a big impact on the environment. Last year, the city recycled more than 19,000 trees, according to the Chicago Tribune.
