Pipeworks Brewing and Emporium Arcade Bar are paying tribute to the Back to the Future trilogy this week with a collaboration beer inspired by the classic films. The brew, named Twin Pines Mall after the shopping center where Marty McFly first gunned Doc Brown's Delorean up to 88 mph while being chased by a group of disgruntled Libyans, will debut at Emporium's Wicker Park location on Wednesday, October 21—the day Brown and McFly arrived in the future at the beginning of Back to the Future Part II.
While the beer itself won't enable drinkers to transcend time and space (unless you drink enough to forget how you got home), it still has a connection to the 1980s blockbusters. Pipeworks and Emporium played off of the fictional mall's name to make a concoction that sounds pretty damn tasty.
"We took the idea 'Twin' and made a double IPA and took the idea of 'Pines' and used spruce tips in the beer for a nice piney aroma and flavor," said Pipeworks operations manager Mike Schallau. "We also used wildflower honey to round out the flavor."
Emporium Wicker Park will usher in the beer's release with screenings of the first two Back to the Future films at 7pm on Wednesday (don't worry, they'll also show the Cubs game). The event is free, and 10-ounce glasses of Twin Pines Mall will be available for $4. The beer will also be sold at Emporium's Logan Square location on Thursday, where you can continue to find a limited number of bottles available until late October.
It's been pretty well-reported that Back to the Future II prophesied that the Cubs would win the World Series in 2015. Even if the North Siders don't win it all this year, at least Chicagoans will have a fitting way to drink away their sadness.
