Doughnuts in Chicago are a big deal. Now it seems Krispy Kreme has finally smelled the doughy goodness and decided to return to Chicago with not just a few stores, but eight. Which means you'll likely have a location within a dangerously short radius of your home.
The new locations are slated to be opened by Chicagoland Restaurants in Chicago and the Cook County suburbs at large over the next few years, according to a press release. Exactly where the restaurants will be is anyone's guess at this point. The nearest Krispy Kreme location is in Elk Grove Village, a little too far to merit the trip. It's also part of a larger doughnut factory and not a true restaurant.
The last Krispy Kreme location in Chicago shuttered its glazed doors with an unceremonious bankruptcy filing in 2007 during the Great Recession. The Chicago area's first store opened in 1998. Krispy Kreme is a North Carolina company founded in 1937.
While it certainly spells competition for the likes of Doughnut Vault, Do-Rite and Stan's Donuts, we think Chicago has enough room for Krispy Kreme—even considering the doughnut colossus that it is.
Chicago, after all, isn't a one-doughnut town.
