Director Dexter Bullard makes his Steppenwolf Theatre Company mainstage debut with the Chicago premiere of Annie Baker's The Flick, which opens this weekend. Baker's play, the winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, follows the employees of a small, independent movie theater as they go about their jobs. In this video, Bullard (who previously directed Baker's Circle Mirror Transformation at Victory Gardens) discusses the way Baker allows scenes to play out in something approaching real time, rather than compressing action for dramatic effect.
Now playing in previews, The Flick runs through May 8 in Steppenwolf's Upstairs Theatre.
