American Theater Company has announced casting for the Chicago premiere of Men on Boats, the first production to be directed by the company’s new artistic director, Will Davis.
The cast for the production, set to open in January, will include ATC ensemble member Kelly O’Sullivan (William Dunn) and ATC youth ensemble alum Lawren Carter (Hall), along with Erin Barlow (Frank Goodman), Arti Ishak (John Colton Sumner), BrittneyLove Smith (Bradley), Deanna Myers (Seneca Howland), Avi Roque (O.G. Howland), Stephanie Shum (Hawkins), Kelli Simpkins (John Wesley Powell) and Lauren Sivak (Old Shady).
Jaclyn Backhaus’s play, depicting the 1869 Colorado River expedition led by John Wesley Powell, is written to be performed by a genderfluid cast of actors portraying the all-male team of explorers. Davis previously helmed the play’s premiere at New York’s Clubbed Thumb, remounted earlier this year at Playwrights Horizons.
Backhaus is currently represented onstage by the Hypocrites’ smashing production of her You on the Moors Now, which continues through October 30 at the Den Theatre (and which also features BrittneyLove Smith and Deanna Myers). Men on Boats is scheduled to run January 6–February 12 at American Theater Company.
