In October, the Art Institute's director Douglas Druick announced that he would retire after 30 years at the museum. He first came on as a curator and has been the president and director for the past four years. During his time at the museum, Druick has seen the addition of the renowned Modern Wing, a nod from TripAdvisor that named the Art Institute the best museum in the world and, most recently, the largest gift of art in its history (estimated at $400 million).
But the folks over at the Michigan Avenue staple weren't about to let Druick go out without a bang. They produced this adorable Ferris Bueller-themed video titled "Director Druick's Day Off." Modeled almost shot-for-shot after the Art Institute scene from John Hughes's 1986 film, Druick plays the roll of Cameron. But instead of wearing a godforsaken Gordie Howe Red Wings jersey like the mopey, privileged character of yore, the museum's departing director sports a Blackhawks jersey with his own last name on the back.
The theme for the send-off video is pretty appropriate. After all, Ferris Bueller's Day Off was released in 1986—just a year after Druick began his tenure at the Art Institute.
