In an effort to make the lives of Union Station commuters less miserable, Amtrak has announced a commitment of $12 million for renovations of the hub.
The funding will be a part of a prospective $500 million investment from the federal government, the state of Illinois, Metra and Amtrak that, according to Mayor Rahm Emanuel, will bring the train station "into the 21st century."
Union Station has a laundry list of issues. From regular overcrowding to a deteriorating exterior facade to mysterious black goop flooding into the concourse, the once renowned station is defunct and gross.
In due time, our city's passenger train hub could become less disgusting than New York's Penn Station.
