A dry city for nearly four decades, beer and liquor returned to Evanston in the ’70s, but it wasn't until 2013 that the northern Chicago suburb gained its first craft brewery. Named for the anti-booze and -tobacco movement that originated in the city, Temperance is tucked away in an industrial park not far from downtown. Inside, there's a wraparound bar, communal seating and a shuffleboard table, while those willing to venture outdoors can hang out around picnic tables on a patio. If you're hungry, make sure to bring your own food, and if your fridge need to be restocked, you can always grab a sixer of the honey-sweetened Birdsong saison (sporting the artwork of Evanston local Jay Ryan) or the citrus-forward Escapist IPA to bring home.
